Privacy Policy

Last updated: 20 August 2026

The short version

SongTrace doesn't have user accounts and doesn't store your search history. When you search, the track/artist/album text you type is sent to our server, which queries public music databases (MusicBrainz, Discogs, Wikipedia) to find the recording and its credits, then returns the result to your browser. Our website uses cookie-free, aggregated analytics to see how many people visit. SongTrace displays advertising through Google AdSense, which — depending on your region and consent choice — may use cookies to show and measure ads; see "Advertising" below for details.

Information we process

The only information involved in using SongTrace is what you type into the search form: a track title, and optionally an artist or album name. This text is sent to our server so it can be forwarded to the third-party services listed below. We don't ask for your name, email, or any account information — there's nothing to sign up for.

SongTrace has no database. We don't log, store, or retain your search terms once your request has been answered. Our hosting provider, Vercel, may retain standard technical request logs (such as IP address and timestamp) for a limited period as part of normal infrastructure operations and security — this is standard practice for any web host and is governed by Vercel's own privacy policy, not something SongTrace itself accesses or uses.

Cookies

SongTrace itself does not set any first-party cookies, and does not use local storage or similar tracking technology to identify you. Google AdSense, which serves the ads on this site, may set its own cookies (and read cookies already set by Google) to deliver ads, measure their performance, and — where you've consented — personalize them based on your interests. If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you'll be shown a consent choice before any personalized advertising cookies are set; you can decline and still use SongTrace normally, and Google will instead show non-personalized ads. You can review or change your ad settings anytime at adssettings.google.com.

Third-party services

Searching SongTrace sends your query text to the following services, each under their own terms:

ServicePurposeData sent
MusicBrainzFind the recording and its performer creditsTitle, artist, album
DiscogsFill in credits MusicBrainz doesn't haveTitle, artist, album, year
WikipediaLast-resort album personnel lookupAlbum, artist
VercelHosting and website analyticsStandard web request data
Google AdSenseServe and measure advertisingAd request data; cookies, subject to consent

None of this is personal information — it's the same song/artist/album text you typed, used to look up publicly available music metadata. Each of these services has its own privacy policy, which we encourage you to review if you'd like more detail on how they operate.

Analytics

SongTrace uses Vercel Web Analytics to understand overall traffic — page views, referring sites, approximate country, and device type. It is designed to work without cookies, without storing your IP address, and without tracking you individually across visits or across other websites. We only ever see aggregated numbers, never a profile tied to you.

Advertising

SongTrace displays advertising served by Google AdSense. Google may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to SongTrace or other websites, and to measure ad performance. Where required (including for users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland), you'll be asked to consent before any personalized advertising cookies are used; if you decline, ads will still be shown but without personalization.

You can learn more about how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and manage your ad personalization settings at adssettings.google.com.

Your rights

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws, you have rights over any personal data processed about you — including access, correction, deletion, and objection. Because SongTrace doesn't collect or store personal data in the first place, there is generally nothing on file to request. If you believe otherwise, or have any question about how your search reaches the third-party services above, contact us using the details below.

Children's privacy

SongTrace is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children under 13 (or the relevant age of consent in your country).

International data transfers

Our hosting provider and the third-party services listed above may process requests on infrastructure located outside your country, including in the United States. Where this involves personal data, those providers are responsible for putting appropriate safeguards in place under their own policies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as SongTrace evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
